Day 7 – 11/30/11: 19th Century European Paintings (start)

Rodin sculpures
This area is more exactly called 19th and Early 20th Century European Paintings and Sculpture, with this period transitioning into the Modern section at some point in the early 1900s. These galleries form a huge block of 32 rooms. Rows of galleries lead from a long sculpture gallery.

This section includes all the French Impressionists, as well as post-impressionists and early 20th Century paintings. These were our earliest areas of interest. So, to complete our methodical tour, I waited until Bev and I were together.

In several hours, we got through half of these galleries, seeing a range of early 19th century artists, including ones we were less familiar with. Entire rooms were devoted to some of the more prominent, such as Corot and Courbet, and several rooms of Degas. The MFA in Boston might conceivably have a larger number of Millets and Monets (only a portion of which are on display at any time), but the Met had a richer selection of most other artists.
