Day 8 – 5/18/12: Cloisters

The Cloisters was built in 1938 in Romanesque style to house a medieval collection of artifacts, as a satellite museum of the Met. It is located in upper Manhattan, convenient by car, so we came here on the way into the city.

The outstanding part of the Cloisters is the interplay between the newly created Medieval-style building, the authentic architectural pieces, and the sculptures, providing a feeling of being in an actual medieval building. Particularly beautiful are the three cloisters (or courtyards), recreated from authentic pieces, each beautifully landscaped. A surprise was the gardens, with plant identifications, on the lower level, which also had a decent café for lunch. All in all, it was a pleasant way to spend a good part of the day.
